Information evening against female genital mutilation at Café Karanfil

Photo: © TERRE DES FEMMESOn September 25th 2017 Mai Shutta held her second BCA at the Refugee café Karanfil in Berlin Neukölln. She organized an info event with the title: Violence against women, FGM. She invited affected women and people who want to come in solidarity to get information and awareness on FGM. During a presentation Mai informed the guests about the different procedures of FGM and about their meaning and their consequences in our lives, bodies and minds.

“I grew up there but I didn’t had the whole picture” said a women from Sudan and a lot of the other present people agreed with her. Mai pointed out the importance of speaking about FGM and encouraged the guests present to talk about it and explained why it is such a taboo. Through a very lively discussion Mai and the guests tried to find some answers to their questionings and to find out ways to support theirselves or friends. Mai also presented ways to get active together against this practice as affected women living in Germany. The information evening was a success and Mai got a lot of positive feedback to her commitment against FGM.

The activity of Mai took place within the framework of our project CHANGE Plus (www.change-agent.eu).

We would like to thank May Shutta for her efforts against FGM!
